Leading away from the castle the town’s medieval streets and courtyards are filled with independent businesses and artisan specialists. The town’s market place is regularly bustling with traders providing meats, cheeses, fish, fruit and veg and plants and flowers as well as clothing and other supplies.

Knaresborough Castle and Courtyard Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the town and the surrounding grounds are great location for a picnic, a moment of rest or enjoying the view across the Nidd Gorge and over the river.

From the Castle a winding staircase connects the upper part of the town to the riverside other gentler routes are available. Knaresborough riverside is often described as a seaside without the sea. This south facing suntrap includes a gentle promenade that traces the banks of the river Nidd. Along the banks of the river, you can not only enjoy the view but also hire a rowboat, enjoy an ice cream or sit down and enjoy lunch beside the water.

Farther along the river in either direction, you can enjoy woodland walks as the cliffs give way to gentler slopes and picturesque meadows and fields.
