Serving the Lancashire town of Blackburn, the station was opened in the summer of 1846 and over the ensuing years, there have been many changes made to the station buildings. The latest redesign was in 2000, costing approximately £35 million, saw the Grade II Listed entrance hall remaining, and the addition of a large piece of art by local artist Stephen Charnock. Taking inspiration from Blackburn’s part in the Industrial Revolution, and famous figures from the past, including politicians David Lloyd George and Barbara Castle, Charnock created an impressive stainless steel screen for the station on Platform 4.
