Weekends from 21 January - 5 March 2017 (services will run as normal 18 and 19 February)

Network Rail will be carrying out weekend engineering work through Bolton, as part of its electrification programme to create better journeys across the North. The work will start on Saturday 21 January, with some journeys to and from Bolton replaced by buses, and others diverted via alternative routes. During the weekend of 18 and 19 February, train services will run as normal.

How will this affect services and stations?

As there are various routes through Bolton, services will be affected in different ways. Some routes will see buses replace trains, while others are able to divert via an alternative route, with little impact on journey time. The replacement times are available now via nationalrail.co.uk so please make sure you check before you travel.

What benefits will we get from the work?

Network Rail is upgrading the railway between Manchester and Preston via Bolton as part of its investment to deliver faster, greener, quieter and more reliable journeys from December 2017.

The work is being delivered as part of the £1bn+ investment to improve rail travel in the north of England: better connecting people to jobs, services, friends, family, education and leisure opportunities. Electrification will help to provide a reliable and sustainable railway for generations to come – tackling overcrowding and reducing the cost of operating the railway.
