What is a Smart Flexi ticket?

A Smart Flexi ticket is a bulk purchase of 10 all-day tickets, offering added flexibility versus traditional season tickets. Plus, you pay for 9 tickets and get the 10th free!

Can I buy a Smart Flexi ticket for my route?

This new product is now on sale between the following stations, in either direction:

  • Leeds & Harrogate (inc. Burley Park, Headingley, Hornbeam Park, Horsforth, Knaresborough, Pannal, Starbeck, Weeton)
  • Leeds & Ilkley (inc. Baildon, Guiseley, Menston, Burley-in-Wharfdale, Ben Rhydding)
  • Leeds & Skipton (inc. Apperley Bridge, Bingley, Cononley, Crossflatts, Frizinghall, Keighley, Kirkstall Forge. Saltaire, Shipley, Steeton & Silsden)
  • Leeds & Dewsbury
  • Leeds & Huddersfield
  • Bolton & Blackburn

We will be adding many more routes in the coming months - the product will ultimately be available at most stations and routes where you can currently buy a season ticket.

How long are my tickets valid for?

Flexi tickets are valid for up to 6 months from the date of purchase of the bundle.

How many times can I travel on each daily ticket?

A Flexi ticket allows unlimited travel on the day of activation between the origin and destination stations shown on the ticket.

Can I use my Railcard to obtain further discount?

Flexi tickets already include a 10% saving versus individual Standard Anytime Day Returns. There are no additional railcard or child discounts, or further discounts if travelling off peak or at weekends.

Can I claim under the Delay Repay scheme?

Yes, do so here. Your rights under delay repay are exactly the same.

How do I buy a Smart Flexi ticket?

Smart Flexi tickets can only be purchased with a Smart card and via the Northern website or mobile app.

You can order your free, personalised card here which will normally be delivered in 2-3 days (up to 5 days).

How do I load/collect the Smart Flexi ticket I have just purchased?

Use the Northern app for rapid collection to your card, available 5 minutes after purchase. Alternatively, please allow up to 2 hours to load the tickets to your card at the ticket gates or Northern ticket machine at your nearest station.

How can I tell how many tickets are left in my bundle?

Do so by logging in to MyAccount, using the orange (NFC) card reader on the Northern app or at a ticket machine.

How do I renew my bundle?

Bundles can be renewed via the ticket portal or the app. Any remaining tickets within their expiry date will be carried over with the new 6 month expiry date.

How do I travel with my Flexi ticket?

You must tap-in and tap-out at the ticket barrier or a platform validator at either end of your journey to activate your ticket. Failure to do so could result in a penalty fare. A customer boarding a train without tapping in first is considered to not have a valid ticket. 

What should I do if the ticket barriers are out of order?

Please tap-in and tap-out as normal even if the ticket gates are forced open. Northern colleagues will also be on hand to help.

Are individual tickets refundable?

Only if you are unable to complete your journey. However, passes are non-transferable. Please contact the Customer Experience Centre on 0333 2220127.

What do I do if I have problems with my Smart card or loading a ticket?

If you encounter an issue with your card or Smart season ticket call our Customer Experience Centre on 0333 2220127. Station colleagues should also be on hand to help.

  • Any transaction references and error messages
  • Your 18-digit Smart card number (on the front of the card)
  • The product you are trying to load
