Our train timetables are changing

From Sunday 18 May 2025, Northern’s train timetables will be updated.

You can check for changes easily by using our timetable tool below to compare the old and new timetables.

What's changing?

Services will generally remain at the same level, with some adjustments in scheduling or additional trains added to highlighted routes.

You'll find more trains with 6 carriages to help give you extra space and a more comfortable journey, including services between Blackpool to Manchester and Wigan to Bolton., as well as more capacity on the Leeds - Doncaster route.

Services will also be changed to accommodate the TransPennine Route Upgrade engineering improvement works around Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

Changes by region

More trains added to the network

We're planning to deploy extra trains across the network, following the arrival of our additional trains - this will give us room to carry more passengers on hundreds of services across our regions.

In Yorkshire, services from Leeds to Doncaster will be operated by four-car trains, giving much-needed extra room on this route.

Additionally, we're aiming to introduce six-car trains on the Leeds Skipton line - to increase capacity for services to/from Leeds, as soon as possible.

Those of you travelling on the Leeds - Skipton line may notice we're having to use fewer carriages on some services over the next few weeks. This is because of a slight delay to the introduction of the six-car trains. We hope to increase the number again in a few weeks, and will keep this page updated with details.

If you're looking for a quieter time to travel on the Leeds-Skipton route, services into Leeds will be quieter after 09:00, and services out of Leeds tend to get busy between 16:00 and 18:00.

Additional services: Bradford to Ilkley and Harrogate line

To help increase space for school traffic in the afternoons, the following services are being introduced:

  • A 14:16 Bradford to Forster Square service, running from Monday to Saturday
  • A 14:51 Ilkley to Bradford Forster Square Service, running from Monday to Saturday

An early 08:55 Harrogate to Leeds Sunday service has been added to the timetable to give travellers an earlier start into Leeds.

East Coast extended services and earlier/later trains

As a result of the new timetable, we're now trialling late night services from the east coast to Hull as well as an earlier morning service from Bridlington to Sheffield (via Beverley).

The 07:03 Beverley to Sheffield service will be extended to start from Bridlington at 06:28 from Monday to Saturday, giving customers an earlier start from the east coast.

Our late-night Bridlington to Hull services (2137 and 2233) have now been extended to start from Scarborough at 21:00 and 21:58. This means there's a later service on Friday and Saturday evenings between Bridlington and Scarborough, for those travelling from the North Yorkshire coast to Hull and beyond.
