If you’re looking for a boredom-busting day out in the North-East then we’ve got you covered. From castles to art galleries and parks to theatres, we’ve compiled this list of our favourite days out in the North-East, so you can spend less time searching and more time adventuring. Here are our top 5 suggestions.

1. Newcastle

Newcastle is a great city for a day out! There are so many things to do, and the city is extremely walkable. Plus, there's a train station right in the centre of town, so it's easy to get to. The Castle Keep from where Newcastle gets its name, is a must-see when you're in the area. It was built by King Henry II in the 12th-century, and has since been refurbished and lovingly restored. You can explore the castle grounds and learn about its history. Plus, there are some great views from the top of the keep!

After an exciting tour of the castle you can meander down to Newcastle Cathedral either on foot or via train to Manors station. The City’s Cathedral is a beautiful Gothic building that was built in the 14th century. It's free to enter, and you can explore at your own pace or on a fascinating guided tour. Be sure to take some time to admire the stained glass windows! They're truly stunning. Newcastle is a great city for a day trip. There's plenty to do, and it's easy to get around. What’s more, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy in this vibrant city.

2. Middlesbrough

If you're looking for a fun day out, look no further than Middlesbrough! This vibrant city is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions. For history lovers, head to Dorman Museum to experience some fascinating local history. Or, if you're looking for something more creative, check out the MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art), which houses an ever-changing selection of contemporary art exhibitions.

If you're visiting with kids (or are just young at heart), be sure to swing by Captain Cook's Birthplace Museum. Learn about the life and times of one of Britain's most famous explorers, then take a walk through his reconstructed childhood home. End your day with a spot of shopping at one of Middlesbrough's many retail outlets. Whether you're looking for high street fashion or unique local gifts, you're sure to find what you're after. And don't forget to treat yourself to a well-deserved cup of tea and slice of cake before catching the train back home!

3. Darlington

St Cuthbert's Church is another of Darlington's historic sights to behold. The church dates back to the 12th century and has been rebuilt and extended several times over the centuries. It's well worth taking a look inside, as the interior is very beautiful. Afterwards, you can head to Darlington's Market Hall to pick up some local produce for lunch or try out some international cuisine. The hall is home to a number of different stalls, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to Indian spices and Thai curries, there's something for everyone at the market hall. Darlington is a great place to spend a day if you're looking for something a bit different from the usual tourist traps. The town has a rich history and there are plenty of interesting things to see and do. 4. Sunderland

Sunderland is a historic city with a strong industrial heritage and was once known as the largest shipbuilding town in the world. Today, Sunderland is home to a vibrant mix of culture and entertainment. Certainly not to be missed is the National Glass Centre which is located in the heart of Sunderland's historic dockyards. The centre is home to a wide range of glassmaking exhibits, workshops, and demonstrations. You can also watch live glassblowing and enjoy stunning views of the River Wear from the centre's cafe. After a creative morning you can head over to Mowbray Park. This popular park features beautiful gardens, a riverfront promenade, and a variety of sculptures and monuments. Mowbray Park is also home to the city's Winter Gardens, which are open all year round.

If you fancied seeing some more of the city sights you could take a boat tour along the river! Sunderland is located on the banks of the River Wear, making it the perfect place to take a boat tour. There are a number of boat tours available, ranging from short sightseeing trips to longer cruises. Whatever type of boat tour you choose, you're sure to enjoy stunning views of the river and its surroundings. Sunderland is a great place to visit for a day out. 5. Hartlepool

Hartlepool is full of history and character. If you're visiting Hartlepool, there are plenty of things to see and do. The Historic Quay is definitely a must-see, as it is home to the Headland, which was once a fortress used to defend the town from Viking invaders. These days, it's a great spot for taking in views of the North Sea. You can also visit the Heugh Gun Battery Museum, which tells the story of Hartlepool's role in World War II. A great follow on from this is the Hartlepool Maritime Experience. This museum is dedicated to Hartlepool's fishing heritage and has exhibits on shipbuilding, life at sea, and more. You can even climb aboard an authentic replica of a 18th-century tall ship! Hartlepool is a town with plenty to offer visitors. From its rich history to its tasty food options, there's something for everyone in Hartlepool.
