Looking for something?

We're creating the kind of workplace where you can focus on being you. So whoever you are and whatever your background, we think you’ll fit right in here.

We’re not just building a brand-new future for rail travel. We’re building a business that’s as diverse and inclusive as the communities we serve.

Here, we put people first. We challenge the way we think, and the way we do things. We encourage everyone to work together. And we strive to create the kind of working environment where you can be you - whoever you are, whatever your background.

This is Northern, and we think you’ll fit right in here.

Our Initiatives

  • When it comes to equality, diversity and inclusion, we’re really making things happen.
  • We offer a wide range of learning, development and training on diversity, and we actively support under-represented groups.
  • We partner with Women in Rail and participate in their mentorship programme.
  • We offer apprenticeships and have a graduate scheme in place.
  • We’re one of the few train operating companies who have a dedicated Diversity Manager.
  • Last but not least, we run an Employee Inclusion Group and a 250 strong Employee Engagement Group, and our equality, diversity and inclusion events calendar has never been busier.

Awards and Accreditations

We’re proud of who we are and what we do. So, it comes as no surprise that we’re accredited by a range of organisations and schemes, including:

Living Wage

The real living wage is based on the cost of living and is voluntarily paid by employers who think a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.

Disability Confident Employer

The disability confident scheme supports employers to make the most of talents that disabled people can bring to the workplace.

Investors in People

Investors in People help create thriving workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Enhance the UK

Enhance the UK is proud to work with Northern delivering interactive face to face disability awareness training to all new frontline staff.  The training is delivered by disabled trainers and takes place in a classroom setting as well as at the station to ensure staff are confident to and know how to appropriately assist disabled customers when required.  We also deliver deaf awareness training and work closely with Northern to provide ongoing training resources for all staff.

But this is just scratching the surface when it comes to the way we work with those communities we serve. When you join us, you’ll see what we mean - because you’ll also be able to roll up your sleeves, get involved, and help us build the brand-new future they’re looking for, too.
