May Bank Holiday 

The Late May Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 29 May until Monday 31 May, sees Network Rail undertake major upgrades to the railway network which affects both Northern and other operator’s services, especially if your journeys involve travelling in the Carlisle, Warrington and Leeds areas.

We’ve provided a summary of the key works and how they will change your journey – just select the drop down below. If your service or route is not listed, then there are no changes to your services, but evening journeys could still be affected.

Manchester to Chester / Ellesmere Port via Warrington Bank Quay

Network Rail will be undertaking track and bridge works along in the Warrington Bank Quay area.

 

Northern

From approximately 1200 until the end of the day, our Chester services from Manchester Victoria will be diverted to run to and from Liverpool Lime Street.

A rail replacement bus service will run between Newton-le-Willows and Chester / Ellesmere Port.

The last direct train services from:

  • Chester to Manchester Victoria and Leeds will be at 1126
  • Manchester Victoria to Chester will be at 1007.

 

Transport for Wales

Transport for Wales services between Manchester Piccadilly to Chester via Warrington Bank Quay will run as a rail replacement bus service from approximately 1000.

The last direct train services from:

  • Chester to Manchester Piccadilly will be at 0852
  • Manchester Piccadilly to Chester will be at 1053

 

Avanti West Coast

From approximately 1200 until the end of the day, Avanti West Coast services between London Euston and Carlisle will be diverted between Crewe and Preston will be diverted via Wilmslow and Stockport.

 

Rail replacement buses will run between:

  • Crewe, Runcorn and Liverpool Lime Street
  • Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western
  • Carlisle and Edinburgh / Glasgow Central.

 

 

Birchwood to Manchester

Network Rail are continuing work to renew the signalling in the Trafford Park area of Manchester.

 

Northern

  • Trains will run between Liverpool Lime Street and Birchwood.
  • Rail replacement buses will run between Birchwood and Manchester Piccadilly.

 

EMR

  • Between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road services will be diverted via Newton-le-Willows.
  • A rail replacement bus will run between Newton-le-Willows, Warrington Central and Widnes.

 

Manchester to Chester / Ellesmere Port via Warrington Bank Quay

Network Rail will be undertaking track and bridge works along in the Warrington Bank Quay area.

 

Northern

There is no Northern service on this route on a Sunday.

 

Transport for Wales

Transport for Wales services between Manchester Piccadilly to Chester via Warrington Bank Quay will run as a rail replacement bus service.

 

Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast services between London Euston and Carlisle will be diverted between Crewe and Preston will be diverted via Wilmslow and Stockport.

Rail replacement buses will run between:

  • Crewe, Runcorn and Liverpool Lime Street
  • Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western
  • Carlisle and Edinburgh / Glasgow Central.

 

Carlisle Station

Network Rail are undertaking works in the Carlisle station area, which includes the closure of platforms 5 and 6.

 

Carlisle to Workington and Barrow-in-Furness

Rail replacement buses will run between Carlisle, Maryport and Workington with trains running between Workington, Sellafield and Barrow-in-Furness.

 

Carlisle to Newcastle

Rail replacement buses will run between Carlisle and Haltwhistle with trains running between Haltwhistle, Hexham, Metro Centre and Newcastle continuing to and from Nunthorpe via the Durham Coast and Middlesbrough.

 

Carlisle to Settle and Leeds

Rail replacement buses will run between Carlisle and Appleby with trains running between Appleby, Settle and Skipton.

Due to track works in the Leeds, there will be no direct service between the Settle and Carlisle route and Leeds.

 

Leeds and Skipton

Train services between Leeds and Skipton will not call at Shipley all day.

 

Leeds and Ilkley

Rail replacement buses run between Leeds and Kirkstall Forge. Train services will run between Kirkstall Forge and Ilkley.

 

Leeds and Bradford Forster Square

Rail replacement buses run between Leeds and Kirkstall Forge. Train services will run between Kirkstall Forge and Bradford Forster Square.

 

Leeds to Morecambe / Settle - Carlisle

Train services on these routes will run between Skipton and Morecambe / Appleby.

On the Settle to Carlisle line, rail replacement buses will also run between Appleby and Carlisle.

 

Leeds to Manchester Victoria via Bradford Interchange

Rail replacement buses run between Leeds and Bradford Interchange. Train services will run between Bradford Interchange and Manchester Victoria

 

York to Blackpool North services

Train services will not call at New Pudsey or Bradford Interchange all day.

 

Leeds to Doncaster / Sheffield / Knottingley via Outwood

Rail replacement buses run between Leeds, Outwood, Wakefield Westgate and Wakefield Kirkgate.

Train services will run between

  • Wakefield Westgate and Doncaster
  • Wakefield Westgate and Sheffield via Moorthorpe
  • Wakefield Kirkgate and Knottingley.

 

Cross Country and LNER will continue to run trains between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate.

 

 

Manchester to Chester / Ellesmere Port via Warrington Bank Quay

Network Rail will be undertaking track and bridge works along in the Warrington Bank Quay area.

 

Northern

Until approximately 1200, our Chester services from Manchester Victoria will be diverted to run to and from Liverpool Lime Street.

A rail replacement bus service will run between Newton-le-Willows and Chester / Helsby.

The first direct train services from:

  • Chester to Manchester Victoria and Leeds will be at 1225
  • Manchester Victoria to Chester will be at 1205.

 

Transport for Wales

Until approximately 1300, Transport for Wales services between Manchester Piccadilly to Chester via Warrington Bank Quay will run as a rail replacement bus.

The first direct train services from:

  • Chester to Manchester Piccadilly will be at 1252
  • Manchester Piccadilly to Chester will be at 1452.

 

Avanti West Coast

Until approximately 1215, Avanti West Coast services between London Euston and Carlisle will be diverted between Crewe and Preston will be diverted via Wilmslow and Stockport.

Rail replacement buses will run between:

Rail Replacement

Rail replacement bus stop locations can be found on the Useful Information Posters at stations.

Please note rail replacement buses are unable to carry:

  • Heavy luggage
  • Non-folding bicycles, prams or scooters
  • Animals (other than registered assistance dogs).

We plan to run accessible buses on our rail replacement services. Visit the Help section for our current availability on accessible buses for planned engineering works.

 

Passenger Assist

Our Passenger Assist service is available from all affected stations for customers requiring mobility assistance. Where possible, we recommend booking assistance in advance by calling 0800 138 5560 (Text Relay 18001 0800 138 5560), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or online. 

 

Travelling with us

Please check the latest travel restrictions prior to undertaking your journey.

If you choose to travel by train, please travel safe. You must wear a face covering on board the train and in the station (unless a medical condition or disability prevents you) - you will be breaking the law if you fail to do so and could be fined by the police.

Try to avoid busy times varying your usual travel times to prevent crowding and check the times of your journey before you travel.

If you are showing any Coronavirus symptoms, however mild, you should self-isolate along with other members of your household. Check the latest Public Health England advice about coronavirus (COVID-19).
