Wigan to Manchester engineering works

Saturdays 20 & 27 February and Sundays 21 & 28 February; 07, 14, 21 & 28 March 2021.

On Saturdays 20 and 27 February, Sundays 21 and 28 February and Sundays through March, the Wigan to Manchester line through Atherton will be closed.

Network Rail will be rebuilding Shakerley Lane railway bridge in Atherton and replacing over a mile of track drainage to better protect the track from flooding.

Trains will run:

  • Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate
  • Southport to Manchester Victoria and Blackburn diverted by alternative routes between Wigan Wallgate and Manchester Victoria.

Rail replacement buses will run between Wigan and Manchester Victoria via Atherton and Swinton.

Rail replacement bus stop locations can be found on station information posters.

Please note rail replacement buses are unable to carry:

  • Heavy luggage
  • Non-folding bicycles, prams or scooters
  • Animals (other than registered assistance dogs).

 

Passenger Assist

Our Passenger Assist service is available from all affected stations for customers requiring mobility assistance. Where possible, we recommend booking assistance in advance by calling 0800 138 5560 (Text Relay 18001 0800 138 5560), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or online.

 

Travelling with us

Please note there are now national travel restrictions in place. Please check the latest national travel restrictions prior to your journey.  
 

If you choose to travel by train, please travel safe. You must wear a face covering on board the train and in the station (unless a medical condition or disability prevents you), try to avoid busy times varying your usual travel times to prevent crowding and check the times of your journey before you travel. 

If you are showing any Coronavirus symptoms, however mild, you should self-isolate along with other members of your household. The latest Public Health England advice is available here.
