Your android phone will be tracking your location using GPS, however our focus will be collecting your location when you are on your journey on the Calder Valley or in the Bolton area. We can do this by sophisticated technology (a geo-fence) of the these areas. Our interest is focused on understanding Northern’s service and how it can be improved, not tracking individual’s journeys. Once you have finished your journey (and have left the geo-fence), the Rail Life app will not ask you to log your experiences, until you start another journey. Outside of your journey you may receive status notifications from the Rail Life app (e.g. wearable battery low power), or trial news from the Rail Life team.

Personal information collected during registration will stay confidential in accordance with the following:

Northern strive to protect the privacy of all personally identifiable information collected during the course of providing services and it is important for you to know how we process your data. By providing us with information you consent to the collection, use and transfer of your information to receive communication regarding the Rail Life Wellbeing study under the terms of the privacy policy and also agree to be bound by our Terms and Conditions which are available on the Northern website:

Data collected via the mobile and wearable device will not be personally identifiable however please see the risks section on the application form for more details.

Data collected by Northern’s registration page is to enable us to identify whether you are eligible to take part in the study.

Wearable and Mobile Application

The data collected from the wearable device and mobile application will be shared via an API and analysed via Thales using the latest analytics tools. The data will be aggregated together to identify trends to uncover stress hot spots or common patterns to highlight unknown aspects of customer experience and stress. Only statistically valid data will be used to identify insights to better understand trends in Northern’s network, not to infer individual passenger stresses.

Restricted data via the API will also be provided to Saturn Visual to display an aggregated stress dashboard to certain stations on the Calder Valley line and Bolton area, for station managers to also identify trends in Northern’s network. Individuals will not be able to be identified but this data will be useful to support station managers in reacting to stressful events more quickly.
