Newcastle to Morpeth and Chathill / Hexham and Carlisle
On selected weekends in September and for nine days between Saturday 01 and Sunday 09 October 2022, Network Rail are making essential upgrades to the track in and around Newcastle station and requires the East Coast Main Line to be closed between Newcastle and Edinburgh. The works will also affect the access to our train maintenance depot at Heaton.

There will be NO SERVICE on 1, 5 and 8 October as a result of RMT and ASLEF industrial action. Customers are advised not to travel on these dates.

Newcastle to Morpeth and Chathill
Buses replace trains between Newcastle, Morpeth and Chathill on 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 October.
Newcastle to Hexham and Carlisle
A revised timetable will be in operation on this route, please check your train times carefully. This to allow LNER to run services between Edinburgh, Newcastle and London by Carlisle and Hexham.
LNER services
LNER will divert train services between Newcastle and Edinburgh via Carlisle (calling additionally) and buses will replace train services between Newcastle and Edinburgh via Berwick-upon-Tweed.
There will also be changes to other LNER services as follows:
- London to Harrogate - only one service each day will run to and from Harrogate. Customers will need to use Northern services between either York or Leeds when travelling between Harrogate and London
- London to Hull - no services will run. Customers will need to use Hull Train services or Northern services between either Hull and Doncaster to connect with services to and from London at Doncaster
- London to Lincoln - no services will run. Customers will need to use EMR services between Lincoln and Newark Northgate to connect with services to and from London at Newark Northgate.
CrossCountry and TransPennine Express services
Services south of Newcastle will terminate at Newcastle. Buses will replace train services between Newcastle and Edinburgh via Berwick-upon-Tweed.
There will only be a very limited CrossCountry service operating within Scotland.
Lumo services
No services will run between Saturday 01 and Sunday 09 October.

There will be some service reductions until at least mid-morning by all operators as trains will be out of place for the start of service. Please check before travelling by using the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner.

Please purchase a ticket before boarding either by app or from the ticket vending machine at stations as Penalty Fares will continue to be in place during the line closures.
