Whilst perhaps lesser known than other sites in the Whitby area, the vast expanse of Sandsend beach has a stunning backdrop of grassy cliffs, and a pretty, quieter feel.

This part sandy, part shingly beach provides a delightful play environment for all the family so make sure you bring buckets, spades and crab nets. The freshwater streams that run across the beach to the sea provide perfect pools for dinghies, or for paddling in, while this part of the coastline is also popular with fossil collectors. You may also find you’re sharing the beach with some more unusual visitors, too, since ducks and pheasants arrive with the water from the beck. The waves can be fierce here making Sandsend something of a surfing mecca.

Sandsend Beach is accessible via a bracing walk from Whitby since Whitby sands are directly connected, but check the tides first.
