You’ll find our Conductors on our trains and they’re always on hand to help customers along their journeys. And there’s a lot more to this job than just checking tickets and travel documents. It’s also about creating a rapport with customers and being the face of our business, together with:

  • Walking through carriages, and answering customers’ questions about routes, arrival times and connections
  • Making announcements over the public-address system
  • Making sure our customers get on the train safely
  • Dealing with any unexpected delays or emergencies.

It all means you’ll need to be friendly and outgoing, and someone who’s not afraid to make conversation and help our customers have a relaxed, easy, enjoyable and safe journey, and a real Northern experience. There’s never a boring day as a conductor!

Graham - Conductor

Meet Graham, Middlesborough's Rhyming Conductor!

The role begins with an intensive 3-month training period where you’ll learn all about safety and other critical aspects and responsibilities, and about how to deliver a great customer service to help us build a railway the North can be proud of.

Here’s what we look for:

  • Customers are at the heart of our business and we are looking for colleagues who excel at delivering customer service
  • People who are highly motivated, positive and enthusiastic.
  • The ability to make decisions confidently and calmly, often under pressure.
  • Great team players
  • The flexibility to work varying shift patterns that can start at any time of day/night and over weekends. The working week averages 35 hours, but this can vary on shift pattern.

Due to the early starts and late finishes, you’ll also need to be able to get to work without relying on public transport, while also living within a 45-minute car journey from your place of work, too.
